Ovarian Cysts
Ovarian cysts have been touted as major causes of infertility, but the truth is that they don’t always cause fertility problems.
What are ovarian cysts? They are fluid or solid-filled sacs within or on the ovaries. They are mostly asymptomatic but may cause sudden pain or discomfort when they
rupture. These cysts are usually diagnosed through ultrasound scans.
Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome
Some people have clusters of these fluid-filled follicles detected during an imaging scan, a condition known as polycystic ovary syndrome or PCOS. PCOS is a leading cause
of infertility among women.
Every female is born with all the eggs she will ever have through the course of her life – over 1 million. However, over the years, the eggs deplete in number and by
puberty, she’s left with a few hundred thousand. One egg is released from either ovary each month during ovulation. Some of the events leading up to the release of the egg include the
follicles within the ovaries being filled up with fluid. Once one egg matures, the follicles burst open and release the egg into the fallopian tubes for fertilization.
In the case of PCOS, the follicles keep getting filled with fluid but never release the egg due to the fact that the hormones required to mature the egg are not being
produced. As a result, ovulation does not occur and pregnancy never happens.
Women with PCOS usually complain of irregular cycles, and anovulation, among other hormone imbalance symptoms.
If you have polycystic ovary syndrome, you might have an increased risk of gestational diabetes, pregnancy-induced high blood pressure, miscarriage, or premature delivery.
Have you been diagnosed with ovarian cysts and you’re trying to get pregnant? It’s not the end of the road for you. There are treatment plans and lifestyle changes that
