As many as 70% - 80% of women before 50 have experienced fibroids or myoma. These benign (non-cancerous) growths can be the size of a pea or a melon in your uterine wall. Growth starts during your reproductive years when your estrogen levels are higher.
The symptoms vary, some women may not have any and only pick the fibroid up in a routine gynaecological check-up or scan. A third of women may experience the following:
Once a fibroid has started developing, it can continue to grow until your estrogen levels decrease after menopause, and then it will usually shrink. Should you not suffer from any symptoms of your fibroid, you need not take any action and can monitor your symptoms carefully.
